Wild Oregon
There is an image that is burned into my mind from this weekend.
Paddeling back up the Siltcoos River, to camp. We had just been playing in the surf in our kayaks for an hour or so with no wetsuits and no spray skirts. We were wet and cold. The wind was screaming out of the north and made everything that much colder. On the beach was a flock of seagulls. Head into the wind... patiently waiting for somethign to happen. Along comes a bald eagle. It lands on the beach and just watches and stares. The seagulls start to nervously hop and fly north a few yards at a time. The eagle just stares. It doesn't flinch. The last view I had was of the huge beak pointing directly at the nervous seagulls. As we round the bend, an osprey dives and slams into shallow water, grabbing a flatfish. All of this after the seals made fun of us in our kayaks.I love Oregon.
