TWiST #26 with Matt Mullenweg | This Week in Startups (TWiST) - Using Open Source to Build a Company

Awesome interview with Matt Mullenweg from Wordpress. He make a great argument for open source as a business advantage. Not only has he made a great argument, but he's living it. Wordpress.com, the service built from Wordpress.org has 200+ million unique visitors a month.

Matt is a really laid back guy, and seems to have a solid and stable approach. I have since moved to Django personally, but I'm a big fan of Wordpress if you have to use PHP.

The most interesting thing for me was his discussion of HOW he used the open source community to make incredibly customizable software. Plug-ins baby.

Why I'm using Posterous... What goes up will stay up - Thank you autoposting

There are lots of fantastic applications for blogging. But most of them feel clunky in some way. Be it a web only interface, a clunky iPhone app or a strange limit on what you can include in your blog roll.

When a friend sent me a link to what Posterous was all about, I halfheartedly looked it over. Another service, more authentication cycles... more work.

Yes, it is work to setup another account on yet another webservice. But man o man, once everything is hooked up, the service is dead simple. It's got me relly excited about blogging again.

But the thing that is the MOST cool to me? Using your email client to write the content. Because then I have a backup of all the content I generate. And with autoposting, if Posterous goes down, you don't disappear. Some of your images might go down for a bit... but your content stays where it is posted to.

And, because of how autoposting works, I can think about integrated messaging and consistent voice. My email title will be my Twitter update and Facebook status.

Pretty rad stuff. I'm excited to see them allow for customization.

Well done Posterous.
